World Book Day books

Dare I admit to somewhat dubious behaviour on my part? Early last week when I read somewhere about the WBD tokens, which would be handed out to all school children, I swore a bit, because Daughter didn’t get hers the last couple of years. Not a big deal, but annoying. Who knows how many other children haven’t had theirs?

Then the girl comes home with six tokens. End of swearing, I promise. It seems she first got her token. Then when the rest of the tokens weren’t wanted by the ungrateful non-readers in her form, the form teacher gave her all the rest, too.

We went to town, literally and figuratively, on Saturday, dividing up our shopping between two bookshops, to lessen the imagined burden. Since this year’s WBD books come as two-in-one, we ended up with 11 titles. The uneven number is because Julia Donaldson had a mini picture book all by herself, with illustrations by David Roberts.

The Tyrannosaurus Drip Song even comes with music, so I’ll get my pianist to try it out later. It’s about a baby duckbill dinosaur who is born in a T Rex nest, and is bullied by the big dinosaurs. But he’s no wimp…

If memory serves I think it’s possibly the first time there has been a picture book among the WBD offerings, which is good, because not all school children are big readers.

I’ll get back to the other books later.

What is the purpose of a podcast?

Ok, so I created my first podcast the other day, which, incidentally, was SO much fun, and I am not being sarcastic. The topic was “spine punches”, which is a story in and of itself. Regardless, or as some fools say “irregardless”, I intended to learn how to create a podcast. Granted, the topic was completely self selected, so I utilized a topic about which I have a great interest, thus the spine punch.

So, I started out using Garageband to create my own song using the provided loops to serve as the backdrop of my podcast. I used selections from the “dark” and “distorted” categories, which made for quite a hot beat. To make an incredibly long story shot, 6 hours later, I had a 2 minute podcast that no one in their right mind would have any interest whatsoever in hearing. Needless to say, this did not stop me for one iota from forcing others to watch my podcast. Since I had to incorporate pictures, it was most definitely an auditory and visual masterpiece. It was somewhat of a hit among my peers, but my audience consisted of others who are also interested in the causes and effects of the dreaded spine punch.

Even though I learned how to create a podcast and post it to a web page, I basically can see no valid purpose for a podcast. Why on Earth would someone want to listen to a podcast when they could simply peruse a web page? I just don’t get it. I am certainly an advocate for utilizing new and emerging technology, but this is just using technology for the sake of using technology. Another means of reinventing the wheel.

Kite surfing - playing the piano and waterstarts

Continuing our series on how to kite surf we have found two videos which we believe you will find extremely useful as a beginner to this exciting sport.

The first video from How2Kite demonstrates how to ‘play the piano’ with one hand. This is essential knowledge as when you are putting the board on your feet you only have the one hand to control the kite. By moving your hand to the right or left of the centre of the bar - as if you were playing the piano - you will find that the kite moves in the opposite direction. The skill is to have enough finesse in your hand not to over-do the correction. When putting the board on your feet you should be aiming to have the kite above your head at an imaginary 12 o’clock.

The second video from andxto99 is an excellent demonstration on how to execute the water start, we suggest one of the first and most essential lessons to learn. As we have just learned you will be keeping the kite overhead by playing the piano and you will be holding your board with your other hand. As you go into the water try to keep the kite out to sea and at a low angle as this will avoid any gust taking you airbourne when still on the beach.

Once in the water place the board in front of you and then put one foot into the boards footstrap, and then the other, making sure your feet are secure. Allow yourself to be pulled down wind by the kite.

When ready for launch you have to dive the kite into the power zone in the direction you want to go. Place the kite at 11 o’clock and dive it down to 2 o’clock and the kite will have the power to pull you out of the water. Remember to bend the knee of your back leg and extend your leading leg.

Sounds easier than it is but remember there is a first time for everyone - keep practicing, take lessons, don’t rush, build your confidence.

Chapter 10: Review

Again with the lists!!! I take it back, chapter 10 is twice as hard as chapter 8 for memorizing lists and specific content. I really enjoyed this chapter, but it was discouraging about how many small “exceptions” there were to the rules. There was an exception of an exception in one circumstance, and it just go out of hand early and continued throughout the whole chapter. I will have to revisit this chapter shortly to really clarify the lines between some of the chapters most basic concepts, which I lost in all the mundane details early on. Maybe its just my head, or that I haven’t really been sleeping, but I think these chapters are getting more annoying/difficult. Concepts are easy, content is not so easy to memorize. For the amount this chapter is worth compared to the rest of the chapters, I doubt i’ll spend the amount of time needed to truly memorize the lists upon lists of exceptions to different types of rules and regulations for different types of bids in different mediums of exchanges. Either way, it was a solid chapter that got right to the point and delivered some good information.

Lately everything is a whirlwind, I need to compose a list just to keep track of my accomplishments and goals! So much has been happening.

Completed the LSAT last weekend and I’ve never felt such relief. As much as I tried to avoid it, I definitely fell into the “LSAT is life; the outside world doesn’t matter” trap prior to the exam and it was absolutely wonderful to be relieved of that mentality. Now just awaiting the results with the wonderful knowledge that there is absolutely nothing more I can do at this point.

Moving into a new place downtown this weekend. Can’t wait! The situation with my roommate (and former best friend) has just been completely over the top. We’ve grown so far apart I don’t even remember why we’re friends. I think this will be the happiest and healthiest thing I have done in a really long time.

I’m interning at one of my favorite places in Milwaukee this semester and it is already such a rewarding experience.

Preparing to finish grad school in May. Oh my!

These are some snaps i took from the live performance by alternative Malayali rock band AVIAL

The show was just awesome and They really rock hard.It’s true that the lyrics of many songs featured in the band’s debut album ‘AVIAL’ reflects on a deep sense of eternal timeless awareness, there is a good chance that the global listener relates to the album simply because its musically sound. With elements of Indie rock and folk, embedded in each of the eight songs featured in the first album, Avial has managed to mix to perfection and share with its listeners an altogether unique sound, what the band members calls “alternative Malayali rock”.

No edits done to all the snaps….!!…..except cropping and adding a signature…..!!

Prologue: Reason

Riku placed a hand on her shoulder.

“In that case, think about it. You really should return to your original self.”

He left. Xion was left to ponder. Would it REALLY be better? What were the benefits? She created another gateway and slipped through it, wondering where to go and what to do. It was pitch black but she managed to locate the correct exit to Castle Oblivion. She stood at the entrance staring blankly into space.

“You’re really came back, huh, Xion (Shion)?”

“Axel (Akuseru)! Please, no!”

“I’m gonna bring you back in, conscious or not.”

“I’m good at returning favours, Axel.”

“Ahaha… That’s funny, but, I don’t think so.”

…

It was a long fight because of all the dodging and misses from both Axel and Xion, but finally, when Xion was struck by surprise, she blacked out. Then some few worlds away, a girl woke up in cold sweat, screaming.

Surfacing

So I’ve really not been ok. I don’t think I realized how far under the water I was until I started to surface recently. I don’t know how I mistook the murky deep for light or air. All I know is that I didn’t know how bad I was feeling until I started feeling better. Depression is tricky that way. It’s like the frog who doesn’t feel the water getting hotter as he starts to boil because it’s been happening so gradually.

Thankfully I have found a good nurse practitioner who recognized the need to up my medication. Every once in a while I’ll have these flashes of hope and light, and their existence is quite a surprise to me. That buoyant feeling means its working!

My new therapist reminded me that in the past six months I have moved across the country, left my job, left my girlfriends, AND my sister died. So a little depression really shouldn’t be surprising me–or a cause to panic. I LOVE her. People think you have to be crazy to go to a therapist. I say I’d be CRAZY not to see one. She helps me realize that I am quite sane.

So, I’ll be here, trudging along–skipping occasionally–and working my way up out of the water.

I think I might be beginning to understand the new covenant which Jesus came to make. In Matthew 5:17-18 he said

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

This quite explicitly states that Jesus neither releases us from the Law, nor will anything else until the earth is done. This the reason that I was wondering about Christians following the OT Law. What I see now is that Jesus’ fulfilment of the the Law changed it. In verse 38-39 Jesus goes on to say

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for and eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”

It is through Jesus’ sacrifice that the other can be forgiven. The Law states statutory punishments for each breach, very often death. It is that punishment which Jesus took for us. Instead of the sinner being put to death, he has taken their punishment upon himself; taken the responsibility for my sins. The Law is still the same and the punishment is still the same; the difference is that we no longer bare the burden of the punishment ourselves.

This means we must forgive, for justice has already been done.

It will take a few more days to get my head around this fully, but I think I am finally beginning to understand.

In a recent discussion group the issue of free clip art as cover art. The first warning is that free is not necessarily free in the commercial use world. Free comes in many forms. Free to use “for personal use only”, Royalty free for private use and then royalty free - public domain. Even the latter has its limitations sometimes. There are many deviations of free that it typically isn’t for what you wanted it to be. The solution is to create, have created or purchase original artwork for your book’s cover art.

Look at the artist who created the poster of Obama that became very popular, so popular that the publishing company that ran the original photo is threatening legal action, however for the artist, the photographer appears to given indication of approval and did not a contract with the publisher of ownership of his or her work.

Who owns what? Is it free to use as an artist, profit, personal or professional? The answer remains the same, if it was not yours originally, then chances are its owned by somebody who knows a lawyer.

Protect yourself first. I prefer to reference photos, then work from sketches for cover designs.

Obama was right, the "Catastrophe" is unfolding

In reading the European and Canadian newspapers this “crisis” is starting to snowball.

I wondered why George Bush used the words “depression greater than the great Depression” and Obama used the word “catastrophe”.

When orders for heavy trucks fall from 38,000 in a month to 600 in a span of 10 months you know there is a major problem. Steel suppliers and other components are dropping business by 50% and Europe is not looking financially well off at all.

The problem with the main stream media is that they only concentrate on what is happening in the USA, but these numbers in Europe will have a devastating effect on the US economy as well.

The Presidents have advisers and sources of information most of the people are not interested in or aware of. That is why they are pushing these “bail out” packages so hard, even if they won’t solve anything, they feel frustrated being powerless as the world’s social fabric is at risk.
